Role de Sprattus sprattus (Linne, 1758) dans l'utilisation du zooplancton des eaux Roumaines de la Mer Noire ArchiMer
Porumb, Loan I..
Feeding of the S. sprattus was studied comparatively with the dynamics of the zooplanktonic trophic base. In April, the sprat consumed 1,459 t of zooplankton, especially Acartia clausi (84 per cent). Zooplanktonic productivity was 30 per cent due to Acartia clausi, and the sprat consumed 56 per cent of this copepod production. In April, the wt growth of the sprat was 115 t. In May, the sprat consumed 6.201 t of zooplankton, that resulted in a fish production of 492 t. A clausi contributed 36.41 per cent to the zooplankton production and the sprat fed on copepods at a level of 93 per cent. In June, only 1,094 t of zooplankton resulted in a fish production of 87 t. Zooplanktonic production was 60 per cent due to A. clausi, and only 12 per cent of this was...

Biologie du copepode Lernaeenicus sprattae Sowerby, 1806) et ses actions pathogenes sur les populations de sardines des cotes du Languedoc-Roussillon. ArchiMer
El Gharbi, Salwa; Rousset, Viviane; Raibaut, André.
Lernaeenicus sprattae is a blood-feeding copepod parasite of the pilchard, Sardian pilchardus . The larval stages of L. sprattae attach to the skin or the fins of the larval fish when the fish enter the lagoons. The mature, and in some cases ovigerous females of L.sprattae seek out the base of the fins or directly implant in the eye of juvenile or adult pilchards. The copepod has a particularly serious effect at the site of infection: its feeding has a severe effect on the fish. The pilchard returns to its breeding grounds in the open sea at the end of summer; this migration allows the copepod to complete its reproductive cycle and a new cycle of infestation is able to begin.

Nutrition chez des copepodes en milieu lagunaire mediterraneen en fonction de la concentration en particules et de la temperature ArchiMer
Gaudy, R; Pagano, M.
The zooplankton of an eutrophic brackish lagoon (Etang de Berre), near Marseille (France) was studied during an annual cycle. It was characterized by large populations of a pelagic copepod (Acartia tonsa ). Grazing on natural particles by this species was investigated. Adults were able to use an extended range of particle sizes, but showed selectivity for particles concentration was observed (14 mu m). Temperature and particles concentration appear to modify the selectivity behavior. Juvenile stages could also catch particles of various size but did not show the same selectivity for the peak particles as adults. Daily food ration was high comparatively to open-sea copepods. Taking into account several results obtained on food ration, egg production and...

Biochemical substrates expenses and respiration at short-term starvation of marine planktonic animals ArchiMer
Pavlova, Z; Morozova, A; Gaudy, R; Shchepkin, V.
One of the most important indices at estimation of productivity characteristics of hydrobionts is oxygen consumed in the process of respiration. Usually respiration (standard metabolism) is measured in small-volume respirometres (30-50 ml) where animals' activity is considerably restricted. It may underestimate respiration in comparison to natural one. Therefore respirometres of larger volume were used. Simultaneously under same conditions we tried to estimate energy requirements by expense of main biochemical components of organic matter (lipids, protein, glycogen). Results were used to calculate energy budget and to compare energy expenditures, measured according to consumed oxygen and tissue substrates expense.

New way to estimate efficient use of energy in copepods during migrations ArchiMer
Petipa, T; Ostrovskaya, N.
It is shown that the energy expenditures on the mechanical movements of copepods depend on the knowledge of character of velocity movements range at active phase. The method of direct estimates of energy expenditures for copepod vertical migration permits to determine more real coefficients of chemical energy utilization on the mechanical work.

Peculiarities of reproduction and generative production of tropical copepods ArchiMer
Sazhina, L.
The aim of the present investigation consisted in revealing the regular natural changes of fecundity in mass pelagic copepods of the World Ocean tropical zone. Particular emphasis was placed on determination of the clutch size, duration of development, rate of generative production formation at both organism and population levels, and connection of these processes with environmental conditions. The major difficulty lay in the fact that most mass species of tropical copepods are laying eggs immediately into water thus complicating the determination of quantitative characteristics of reproduction.

In search of standardisation: A comparison of toxicity bioassays on two marine crustaceans (Palaemon serratus and Tigriopus brevicornis). ArchiMer
Le Dean, Loic; Devineau, J.
In order to mitigate the insufficiency of the number of currently available toxicity tests in marine middle, two studies on the effects of cadmium and zinc were carried through with two marine crustaceans: the prawn Palaemon serratus and a copepoda Tigriopus brevicornis. The comparison of methodologies (rearing conditions - experimental procedure) and results obtained allowed to show the advantages and the disadvantages of these two tests in order to consider a standardization.

Production de chitine par les crustaces du zooplancton de la baie de Calvi (Corse) ArchiMer
Gervasi, E; Jeuniaux, C; Dauby, P.
Chitin was estimated in samples of planktonic crustaceans living in Calvi Bay (Corsica). The percentages of chitin, with respect to dry weight, are comprised between 3.10% in Clausocalanus spp. and 12.22% in Cladocera (mainly Evadne ). The percentage of chitin remained approximatively constant during larval development in Calanus helgolandicus (3.26%). Using these results and the values of total biomass and production estimated by Dauby (1985) at the same place during a complete annual cycle (1983-1984), chitin biomass and production were calculated for every planktonic crustacean species (or group of species) and for the whole crustacean plankton. Daily chitin production was maximum during May (20.06 mg.m super(-2)/d). As far as the whole year is...

Neue marine Cyclopoida Gnathostoma (Crustacea, Copepoda) von Puerto Rico. Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 57 Naturalis
Herbst, Hans-Volkmar.
In the flat littoral of the coast of Puerto Rico (West Indies) at the reef of Cayo Enrique a few Cyclopoida Gnathostoma were collected in colonies of the corallimorpharian Ricordea florida Duch & Mich., which belong to the subfamilies Pterinopsyllinae and Euryteinae. These are the following species: Pterinopsyllus insularis n. sp., Euryte grata n. sp. and Ancheuryte notabilis n. g., n. sp. Pterinopsyllus insularis differs from the till now known species of the genus by the number of segments of the first antenna, as well as in the form and armature of P 5. A differential diagnosis and a key for the genus is added. Because of striking differences in the structure of antenna 1 and P 5, a new genus Pterinopsyllotus is established for Pterinopsyllus...

Laophontopsis Sars and the taxonomic concept of the Normanellinae (Copepoda: Harpacticoida): A revision Naturalis
Huys, Rony; Willems, Kris A..
The taxonomie concept of the subfamily Normanellinae Lang (Harpacticoida, Laophontidae) is revised. As a result a new family Laophontopsidae is proposed to accommodate Laophontopsis Sars and two new genera Aculeopsis and Telodocus. It is concluded that the presumed boreo-mediterranean distribution pattern displayed by the type species L. lamellifera (Claus) is merely the result of erroneous identifications. The population of northwest Europe is assigned to a new species L. borealis and another new species L. monardi is proposed for Monard’s (1928) material from Banyuls-sur-Mer. L. secundus Sewell is placed in the new genus Telodocus. Aculeopsis gen. nov. embraces only A. longisetosa spec. nov. and constitutes the most primitive genus of the family. The...

Lovenula (Neolovenula) alluaudi (Guerne and Richard, 1890) in the Canary Islands (Copepoda: Calanoida: Paradiaptominae). Stygofauna of the Canary Islands, 19 Naturalis
Bowman, Thomas E..
Lovenula (Neolovenula) alluaudi is widespread on Lanzarote, where it occurred at 22 of the 105 stations. On Fuerteventura it was found at only 2 of the 53 stations, both in the extreme northwest part of the island. It was also found in a reservoir on the south side of the small island of Alegranza. Samples collected at several hundred stations in the other Canary Islands failed to yield a single calanoid, supporting the belief that the eastern islands are fragments of the African continent that drifted to deeper waters. Males outnumbered females in about 2/3 of the samples, often heavily.
